Giving Back To The Community

issue 03 // December 2011
WELCOME

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

"Each of us is a being in himself and a being in society, each of us needs to understand himself and understand others, take care of others and be taken care of himself." ~Haniel Long At Tallgrass Pictures we strive to give back to the community, especially during times like these when more people need help. We believe in supporting causes that make a great impact on people and change their lives for the better.

CAMPAIGN FOR RADY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

Rady Childrenʼs hospital is San Diegoʼs only hospital dedicated solely to pediatrics. Ranked amongst the top 10 pediatric hospitals in the country, Rady’s strives to give the best state-of-the-art care to each and every child who comes in the door. In support of their vision, Tallgrass Pictures just finished a film that explores the hospitalsʼ life-changing pediatric therapies. The expansion and new Acute Care Pavilion has helped to ensure that no child will ever be turned away. The film will encourage philanthropists to continue to help support their goals and provide for the future.

BUILDING A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

San Diego State University has proven to be a powerful advocate for growth and enrichment of our community. We teamed up with them to create a film that gets the community excited about the University’s $500 million capital campaign. In it we show how “Leadership Starts Here" at SDSU. The campaign features the stories of four Aztecs who explain how SDSU has enriched their lives and strengthened the community. Funds raised by the campaign will support student scholarships, faculty endowments, and academic programs that ensure the University’s continued success and positive influence throughout the region.

PCI BOOK HITS PRESS

The 3rd installment in a series of coffeetable books for Project Concern International was printed last month. We are very proud of this 80-page documentary book that was photographed by Jeffrey and photo-edited, designed and color-managed in-house by the Tallgrass team. Americas: Chapter 03 is filled with images from Haiti, Bolivia, Mexico and Southern California that show the positive effects of the PCI programs. In Bolivia, PCI is empowering communities to build kitchens in the schools and learn about nutrition and clean water. In Haiti, PCI implemented a cash-for-work program, which helped employ 2,500 people to rebuild their communities, and organize programs for children. Mexico has been struggling with the ongoing battle against TB and the challenges of transportation to medical clinics. PCI brings the medicines, counseling and support to vulnerable families via its mobile clinic. Special thanks to Shawn Ruggerio and the entire PCI team, Karen and Ed Mercaldo at GEM Foundation, Colleen Jackson and the team at SOS printing. The books are being distributed through PCI. It has been a great collaboration between PCI, Gem Foundation, and Tallgrass Pictures and we were honored to take part in telling such beautiful stories.

FACES OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The rain was coming, but we didnʼt care - the shoot was scheduled rain or shine! So we set up an outdoor studio in the middle of the sidewalk below our downtown San Diego studio. Then for 12 hours we photographed everybody who walked by. It was a great way for us to connect with our local community and make a bunch of new friends. We had some great collaborators. Three students brought a couch, guitar and chair, and built an impromptu living room on our set. Others showed off their dance moves, or stacked on top of each other like a bunch of hipster cheerleaders. We had a lot of fun and everyone was really excited when we emailed them their portraits.

SHARING THE HONEY BUZZ

Jeffrey visited his son Sachaʼs 2nd grade classroom at the San Diego French-American School, to show the kids how to harvest honey from honeycomb. The bee hives are at Tallgrassʼ North 40 garden. The eighteen 2nd graders helped uncap, spin (using a centrifuge), bottle, and sample the fresh honey. Sacha translated the entire demonstration into French. One of the students commented, “Itʼs better than Halloween candy!" Nothing like a good sugar honey buzz for an afternoon snack, eh?

Seasons Greetings Everyone! Gavin Filipiak here, Senior Editor at Tallgrass Pictures. In last monthʼs tech corner Tsukuru talked about how we use RED digital cinema technology to maximize quality and creative yield. This month I’d like to tell you about our in-house DaVinci Resolve color correction suite that is the perfect complement to filed-based digital cinema like the RED or ALEXA. Color correction is the process of making adjustments to the color and contrast of each video clip in order to:
  • Fix problem clips that may be too bright or too dark, or have improper color.
  • Even out the color and contrast of each of the shots in a scene so they all look as if they occur in the same place at the same time.
  • Bring attention to specific elements in the frame.
  • Make creative adjustments to stylize the appearance of the images.
The RAW format of RED digital cinema allows us to make dramatic changes in style and appearance without losing any quality. DaVinci Resolve allows unlimited grading of raw RED files in real time. At Tallgrass Pictures, we use the DaVinci Resolve color corrector to take digital cinema to the highest level of quality. DaVinci is the color corrector behind more feature films, television series, commercials, and documentaries than any other brand. Now letʼs explore the technology behind DaVinci Reslove. DaVinci uses node-based image processing where each node is a separate color correction, power window or effect. Nodes are similar to layers in Photoshop and can be used to combine grades, effects, mixers, keyers and custom curves in any order to achieve different styles. Every node has full YRGB processing with primary and secondary controls: lift, gamma, gain, hue, saturation, luminance, calibrated printer lights, matte defocus, image defocus and 3D object tracking. And the 3D tracking is really smart. It automatically follows an object’s movement, position and size, even if it’s tracking someone’s face and he turns his head sideways. DaVinci Resolve also offers Image Stabilization, for handling shots that suffer from movement of the camera. The stabilizer is intelligent, and uses dozens of points to lock every part of the image. This results in incredibly smooth images, even from shaky handheld cameras. For more information contact Gavin Filipiak at 619.208.7445.

We were ready for the rain...but it never came!

We were ready for the rain, but it never came! What a better way to start out the month of December then to spend a few days doing a photoshoot at a sunny beach like La Jolla?! With an expert creative team from Watermark and great models, we got some beautiful shots all over San Diego, from La Jolla to Crystal Pier to Downtown. Our production crew was feeling so inspired by everyone’s hard work they did a little posing as well… but we promise we will leave the real modeling to the professionals ;). After a very busy 5 day photo shoot it was nice to relax and enjoy a BBQ/bonfire at the beach. Everyone sat around the fire and ate some tasty food and it was a wonderful end to a great project. We hope to see all our friends at Watermark back in San Diego very soon!

Watermark Catalog Shoot

Tallgrass Pictures welcomes Calgary based Watermark back to San Diego for a 6 day catalog shoot. Thrilled to be working with our friends and collaborators again, it’s been sunny and beautiful and we are really looking forward to the outdoor shoot.

Happy Turkey Day!

Get your bellies ready for tomorrow’s big feast! Happy Thanksgiving from Tallgrass Pictures :)

The world’s most powerful 3D object tracker...Too cool not to have!

Tallgrass Pictures brings DaVinci Resolve into the workflow DaVinci color correctors are the standard in post production since 1984. With processing quality so revolutionary it has won an Emmy award for contributions to the TV industry! All image processing is handled in the deepest 32 bit floating point accuracy and it also has the world’s most powerful 3D object tracker. Just another perk that Tallgrass Pictures is happy to offer in the list of services.

Honey, I've taught the kids how to play with bees...

Jeffrey visited Julien Moncelet’s 2nd grade classroom at the San Diego French American School (Sacha’s classroom) to show the kids how to harvest honey from honeycomb. The bee hives are at the North 40 Garden behind Jeffrey, Jennifer and Sacha’s house. The eighteen 2nd graders helped uncap, spin (using a centrifuge), bottle and sample the fresh honey. One of the students said, “It’s better than Halloween candy." Sacha translated the entire demonstration into French. In the spring, the class will come to the North 40 Garden for a field trip.

Up in Space!

Up, up, here we go… Inspired from childhood memories of early space exploration, this shoot took on a whole life of it’s own. With special help from our friends at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, we were able to create some wonderful images using a vintage Russian High Altitude Suit.

5 Spot package for Toyota San Diego

Brandtailers awarded Tallgrass Pictures a 5 spot package for Toyota San Diego. We will be casting tomorrow afternoon in LA with over 150 people confirmed to audition. We will start shooting here in San Diego next week. It’s very exciting and we can’t wait to get started.

Our two RED EPICs are ready to be shipped!

Since the first movie camera was invented in late 19th century, technology has been evolving. In the past 3 years the rate of change has become exponential, particularly digital. This month the legendary camera manufacture Arri has quietly discontinued the manufacture of all it’s film cameras. Looking into the near future, RED has developed a new camera called the EPIC, 5k (5120x2700px = 14MP), up to 300 fps. It’s even more amazing at half the size of the RED ONE. We’re scheduled to take delivery of two EPICs and we’ve just got confirmation that they are ready to be shipped! STOKED! http://www.red.com/products

Lunch and Learn with Tallgrass Pictures!

Our “lunch and learns” have been tremendously popular. We have been visiting some amazing advertising agencies all throughout San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. We come in with the RED camera, show reel, print portfolio, and most importantly lunch and *cocktails*. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to learn about cutting edge technology and some real world workflows and to create some amazing visuals that can help clients tell their stories better. If you would like to schedule a “lunch & learn” at your office, contact Aly Bucholz at aly@tallgrasspictures.com

SDSU and Tallgrass are on a mission!

“The Campaign for SDSU will leverage the university’s unique strengths and its synergy with the San Diego region in support of our students, our faculty, our staff and our community,” said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. SDSU’s campaign goal is to raise $500 million for their students, faculty and community. You can help too! A glimpse at our Marie Antoinette shoot!

Have a glimpse at our work from the Marie Antoinette shoot we did in the Alcazar Gardens in Balboa Park. It was a beautiful evening to create an 18th century european fantasy world 10 minutes from our studio in downtown San Diego.

PCI Book Heads For Press

We delivered the 3rd installment in a series of coffee table books for Project Concern International to the printer this week. We did all the book design, CMYK conversions and color manage proofing in house. It’s looking amazing, 80 pages of double truck documentary images from Haiti, Bolivia, Mexico and Southern California. It will be printed and distributed through PCI very soon. It’s a great collaboration between PCI, Gem Foundation, and Tallgrass Pictures.

Salton Sea made quite the impression on us!

Salton Sea made quite the impression on us as we rolled in after a 3 hour drive into the middle of the desert. It was the perfect location for our photoshoot “Pulp Fiction II". What better place to fight with knives and guns, do donuts and kick up clouds of dirt with rad muscle cars, and burn flares into the night? We had such a great time, thanks to all who helped make it possible.

Marie Antoinette concept shoot

We have a pretty exciting day today, we’ve rented some beautiful Marie Antoinette style dresses, and we’ve cast some beautiful models from LA to come out and model. Looking forward to sunny day of shooting in the beautiful Alcazar Gardens in historical Balboa Park. Stayed tuned for some great photographs.

Rain came out of nowhere!

Great turnout at the sidewalk shoot yesterday. We weren’t really expecting the rain to suddenly come pouring down like it did, but we made it work. Got a chance to meet many people in our neighborhood and had a lot of fun.

Faces of the Neighborhood

We’re taking it to the streets… Starting tomorrow at noon we’ll have a full studio setup out at the corner of 13th & G (two floors below our studio). We’ll be making documentary portraits of everyone who walks by. Come join us!

PULP FICTION II AT SALTON SEA

The Salton Sea was the perfect location for our edgy fashion shoot “Pulp Fiction II." What better place to fight with knives, kick up clouds of dirt, and burn flares in eerie, crumbling shacks?

LEADERSHIP STARTS HERE

A new 30 second TV spot, written, produced, directed, and edited by Tallgrass Pictures broke nationally on ESPN September 8th. “I Believe" was inspired by the SDSU basketball chant “I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!", made famous during their 2010 journey to the NCAA Sweet 16. “We are using this chant as a metaphor for San Diego State’s momentum and leadership across all areas," said director of the spot, Jeffrey Lamont Brown. To illustrate how deeply SDSU is woven into the fabric of San Diego, we filmed Aztecs across the county: surfers, nurses, teachers, entrepreneurs, and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. Then we finished strong with a shot that had 500 extras. The production attracted media coverage on NBC, Fox, and other news stations. Also as part of this hybrid campaign, we did a 10-shoot still campaign for brochure, web, billboard and magazine ads, and produced a web film that follows 4 Aztecs, as they show us why “Leadership Starts Here." "To say the new commercial is a hit is an understatement. In four days it has become the second most watched video we’ve ever produced, " said Greg Block, SDSU Director of Media Relations and New Media.

HOT TIME IN DALLAS, 110º IN THE SHADE

We had the pleasure to fly to Dallas in August to work with our friends and collaborators at Interlex, a multicultural advertising agency lead by Heather and Rudy Ruiz. Because of the extreme heat, we shot lifestyle images on green screen and composited them onto existing backgrounds to produce stunning visuals. We had a great time, sampling Dallas food and nightlife. GO ALY, GO ALY! A little word of advice from JT, our amazing gaffer on the shoot, “Everbody’s carrying in Texas, so don’t mess with them, just go out and have a good time." We’ll show the final images in next month’s newsletter!

28,800 PICTURES, ROUND THE CLOCK, 3 DAYS

We shot 28,800 pictures around the clock for 3 days in Dothen, Alabama for US Airways. The images were combined into a time-lapse film that documents the installation of a luxurious new first class section into a US Airways EMB-175. While we were down South we got to enjoy some fine southern cooking: fried chicken, black-eyed peas, collard greens, squash, lemon cake, and sweet tea for $6.35! " I’m in heaven", said Tsukuru. Special shout out to the PEMCO Mechanics for making this all possible. 01 // Brandtailers awards Tallgrass Pictures a 5 spot package for Toyota San Diego. 02 // Luerzer’s Archive chooses 4 of our images for the upcoming 200 Best Ad Photographers. 03 // Our RED EPICs are on their way!!!! 04 // Assistant Editor Kate Szalay joins Tallgrass Pictures. 05 // The Americas: Chapter 03, a lush photobook for PCI heads for press.

Tsukuru here, I’m tech maestro at Tallgrass Pictures and I’ll be writing an occasional series about the cool technology that we use here. camera One of the most important pieces of technology that we’re using today is the RED ONE MX Digital Cinema Camera. By now, all of you know it, most have worked with it. However, since this is one of our first issues of The Lounge, I’d like to do a RED primer. RED ONE MX is an industry changing piece of equipment that captures ultra high definition video, called 4k (4520 x 2540px = 11.5MP) with amazing feature film looks and it’s flexible enough to use on everything from small documentary shoots to commercials to feature films. We are able to save the time and money and raise the creative yield because it’s easier to collaborate and there is tremendous flexibility in the digital post workflow. The RED ONE MX captures in a RAW format that makes for beautiful color, perfect exposure and contrast. Many films and TV shows are being shot on RED. (E.g. Pirates of the Caribbean, Contagion, The Hobbit) red.com/experience And with proper planning, amazing 13 inch wide x 300 dpi stills can be pulled from the data stream. The quality is outstanding. In fact, one of our frame grabs just won Luerzer’s Best 200 Ad Photographers Worldwide contest. Famous fashion photographers have used the RED ONE to make beautiful images for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Esquire. red.com/experience/photography We’ve used prints from RED stills to great success for some of the largest companies in the US. SDSU debuted the new "Leadership Starts Here" TV spot!

SDSU debuted the new "Leadership Starts Here" TV spot at a press conference today. “We’re thrilled to be a part of their new campaign after producing the 2010 TV commercial, ‘Aztec for Life’,” said Tallgrass Asst. Production Coordinator Aly Bucholz, “which won a silver ADDY, a CASE Gold Award and was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as one of the top college spots of 2010.” The new commercial is inspired by the famous SDSU basketball chant “I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL WIN!” which was adopted during last years SDSU Men’s Basketball journey to the NCAA Sweet 16.   “We are using this chant as a metaphor for San Diego State’s momentum and leadership across all areas,” said director of the spot, Jeffrey Lamont Brown. To illustrate how deeply SDSU is woven into the fabric of San Diego, we filmed Aztecs and SDSU supporters across the county: from surfers, nurses, teachers, entrepreneurs to San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, and we finished it strong with a single scene that had 500 extras. The production was so big it gained media coverage on NBC, Fox, and other news stations in the city. The 30-second spot will be debuted at the SDSU vs. Washington State football game on September 17th. A video/web portion of the campaign will support the public launch of “The Campaign for SDSU”, the university’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign that has so far raised $228 million toward it’s $500 million dollar goal. These gifts will benefit the students, faculty, and key programs on campus including Nursing, Education, Science, and SDSU Athletics. Not one... but four!

Luerzer’s Archive just informed us that they’ve chosen not one, two, or three… but four images to feature in their latest edition of 200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide. A couple cool facts about the images: The first image at the top will be a full spread, and the bottom image was a still pulled from the RED camera footage during the filming of the "Sunday Evening" trailer. We are so stoked to have made it in this elite edition, not to mention how many images have been chosen for this publication. You’re considered lucky if you have two image selected, let alone four. :)

Farewell, summer interns!

As summer fades away and fall starts closing in, we must bid farewell to our summer interns. After her internship with Tallgrass Pictures, Annie Ly will officially be a Brooks Institute graduate and will be ready to take on the world with her new found knowledge and skills. USC graduate, Nick Suitt says, “my internship here has been crucial for me because I’ve learned a ton while writing, coordinating, shooting, and editing. Without it I would not have landed my 1st full time gig." Nick will move on to start his new job as Production Coordinator for Scout Vision in LA. As a thank you for all their hard work and effort, we had a big BBQ over the weekend. We decided to do it right by picking some fresh veggies from the company garden to grill up with our delicious BBQ chicken. After dinner, JB’s son Sacha defeated everyone in water balloon wars. While we sat on the patio drying off, we reminisced over the memories of the summer and popped a bottle of champagne in their honor. Nick and Annie, it has been a pleasure to have you along with us this summer. The time has gone by too quickly. We wish you all the best with your bright new futures!

200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide...JB was one of them!

Jeffrey Lamont Brown was named “200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide" by Luerzers Archive. The photograph chosen will be announced in just a few days… we’re all so anxious to find out!

Welcome back, Eliot!

Tallgrass Pictures welcomes back intern Eliot Wilson from University of Oregon. He’s here with us in between his summer school classes and the upcoming fall semester. He definitely enjoys staying busy, and we like to help him with that because he does such a great job! Welcome back Eliot, it’s always good to have you around.

Rady Children's Hospital Awards Contract to Tallgrass

On August 12th, Benjamin Metcalf, Public Information Officer at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego awarded Tallgrass Pictures a production contract for a film that will explore the hospitals’ life changing pediatric therapies.

We like to fly around the world!

Heading home from Santa Maria after another amazing shoot with US Airways. We were shooting aboard Embraer 175 and pretending to fly around the world! The incredibly comfortable seats were almost too good to leave, but before the sun set we took the plane around to the most scenic area of the tarmac where JB helped park the plane to do some beauty shots of the exterior before the fog rolled in over the vineyards. Thanks to Rusty, Amber, Karyn, Smila and all the wonderful folks from US Airways, Republic, and C&D/Zodiac for collaborating and making the shoot run so smoothly.

Back in San Diego!

We’re back in San Diego to join the rest of our crew after a couple of warm and cozy days in the Dallas shooting stills on set with the wonderful folks from Interlex. Thanks for having us, we love working with you Heather, Anthony, Chris, Nancy, and George! And also big thanks to our grip and electric crew for all their help and hustle around the shoot, we’re so appreciative of you Eric and JT :) What a good week it has been.

JB directed the first PSA of 3!

Jeffrey Lamont Brown directed the 1st PSA of a 3 spot campaign for the Veteran’s Administration (VA) last week in LA.  This spot is designed to raise awareness about the VA’s Veterans Crisis Line among the many Vietnam era veterans who still suffer from Post Tramautic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The spot is scheduled to air nationally during Suicide Prevention Week September 4-11, 2011. Vietnam era veteran Phil Sky did an amazing job with a gut wrenching script that was the result of extensive research by the creative team of Karen Lau and Roman Wyden. Wyden, EP at Creable Films said,  “Working with real people about real issues is Jeffrey’s forte and he captured the genuine spirit of this campaign." Brown said, “I’m really pleased with the look of the footy, Thanks to everyone, it was an ambitious night shoot and everybody pulled hard and made some great imagery to serve this deserving group."

Announcing the teaser for Sunday Evening!

Tallgrass Pictures LLC announces the release of the teaser for Sunday Evening, a feature film adapted from a successful european stage play written by Zachary Karabashliev. Preview screenings of the teaser have generated enthusiastic responses, many fans are anxiously awaiting the full length feature film. Produced and directed by Jeffrey Lamont Brown, the production endured long nights of filming, man-made rain, and screaming police with guns drawn. Starring Camelia Dee, Catalina Maynard, Joshua Hershfield, Benjamin Mathes, Dave Rivas, and Stephanie Philo. A synopsis of the film: Set in one of Southern California’s exclusive communities, this unsparing and unexpectedly funny film delves into the lives of two families sharing one street and one rainy Sunday evening. Nick is a successful stock broker, married to and still in love with his sweetheart, Rose. And he has just found out about her affair with a redneck. Their next-door-neighbor, Stela, a film star from the 80’s, is now a face from pharmaceutical TV ads, and a stay-at-home mom. When Stela’s confrontation with her daughter Jenny cartwheels out of control and intertwines with Nick and Rose’s clash, the film radically changes perspective.

Shooting motocross in the Ventura County sun!

What better way to start the base summer tan then shooting motocross in the Ventura County sun? The Tallgrass team spent last wednesday shooting for JB’s upcoming project PLAY: The Passion of Sport. Lots of stills and overcrank footy of MX’er Bobby Gold hucking up and down the dirt bike course in Piru, lugging cameras and gear to and fro, shooting bikes as they hurled right over our heads, engulfing us completely in dust, and we loved every minute of it! It was so much fun, we didn’t want to leave. We stayed and shot until the sun was completely gone……..and I still have a little dirt in my shoes.

Smooth landing for US Airways and Tallgrass

Thanks everybody for making the US Airways shoot so smooth… though the all-nighters left me with a funny university-like craving for cup-o-noodles. Here’s a quick cut that shows some of the footy.

Redbull + Tallgrass = All-Nighters

Redbull powered with multiple cases, JB + the Tallgrass team pulled all-nighters to shoot motion/stills for US Airways. All cozied up with 30 cast & crew, we turned night to day inside and out the massive airplanes. It was a bit of a challenge, but with the mad skills from G+E, camera and production we killed it! Amber, Kevin, Rusty, Smila and the entire US crew were awesome.

America’s fattest city? Not anymore!

America’s fattest city? Not San Antonio anymore! Interlex Creative Director Heather Ruiz’ new campaign educates and inspires residents of the Texas city. Titled “San Antonio Balance," the new campaign is running on TV, Billboard, Transit, Print and Web. Ruiz said, “Our team here at Interlex is strongly driven by a desire to be the example of positive change. And in 16 years, our focus on elevating the human spirit has never blurred. Jeffrey was a must-have for our project. I knew our audience needed to link to the emotion in our ads. They needed to understand the subjects are more than just faces, we are all humans struggling with the same issues. I knew Jeffrey’s energy would make the connection almost tangible. And he did! The photos are alive with the raw emotion of hope and love." The Tallgrass team, headed by JB, traveled from San Diego for the shoot. Quoting from a recent MoveOn rally, Brown said, “the Interlex Team was amazing: so prepared, fun to work with, and true commitment to progressive ideals. It’s a trifecta of goodness!"
